ECONOMY & TRADE
Sri Lanka's exports surpassed US$9 billion in the first half of 2026, driven by growth in both merchandise and services despite challenges in several key sectors. Analysts are also weighing whether the island's mineral wealth — graphite, mineral sands, quartz, feldspar, kaolin and silica — could help ease broader economic troubles. The Colombo Stock Exchange and SEC launched "A Share for Everyone, A Unit for Everyone" investor forums in Monaragala and Batticaloa to widen retail market participation.
CRIME & LAW ENFORCEMENT
A senior deputy inspector general (SDIG) revealed that US$715 million was funnelled abroad to Dubai-based drug dealers through fake companies — with one individual owning 43 firms and 55 people involved, allegedly aided by some bank officers. The law-enforcement community is also mourning former Inspector General of Police C.D. Wickramaratne, who died suddenly. Separately, singer Thilanka Vidusha ("Chili") was found guilty by the Kaduwela Magistrate of obstructing and attempting to assault police officers, and fined Rs. 6,000.
GOVERNMENT & DIPLOMACY
China said it is ready to deepen strategic trust with Sri Lanka, with the Chinese Ambassador citing expanding defence consultations, training and equipment exchanges. India's Defence Adviser in Colombo, Capt. M. Anand, called on Navy Commander Vice Admiral Damian Fernando. PM and Education Minister Harini Amarasuriya told Parliament that university Victim Support Committees and the UGC's 24/7 Anti-Ragging Hotline are strengthening student grievance redress. The US Embassy warned visa applicants that criminal records or false information could permanently bar entry to the United States. Sri Lanka's passport rose to 94th in the 2026 Henley Index — its best ranking in recent years.
PUBLIC SERVICES & HEALTH
The government will upgrade Wildlife and Forest Conservation holiday bungalows using modern technology. The Department of Animal Production and Health called for a coordinated, humane plan to eliminate rabies by 2030. A psychotherapist warned that toxic alcohol addiction alters brain chemistry by disrupting the dopamine reward system.

A strong wind advisory is in effect for the Northern and North-central provinces and the Hambantota and Trincomalee districts until 11 a.m. tomorrow.
